William signed up with the Army on the 22nd December 1902, at the age of 19 years 8months. He was with the 142nd Battery Royal Field Artillery. He was discharged on the 31st December 1915.
William had previously served with the 3rd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment prior to December 1902.
He was in France from August 1914 until December 1915, and one of the Campaigns he was in was the Expeditionary Force in France, and fought in the Battle of Mons as well as Ypres.
